I read the first edition of this book back in 2007, as a relatively new professor. By that time, I was enjoying teaching so much that I convinced my husband to go back and earn a graduate degree so that he, too, could become a professor – and I gave him my dog-eared copy of the first edition of the book. By applying the tips and “outside the box” thinking of the 1st edition, I was able to build up a consistent repertoire of courses to reach that six figure income level. A lot has changed in academia in the past seven years – there is much more competition for work, adjunct course loads have been capped at many institutions (meaning you teach the same total number of courses, but you’ve got to do so spread out over a higher number of schools), and HR processes have become far more complex. Thus, while the philosophical foundation of “adjunctpreneurship” that so enchanted me in 2007 has remained constant, there was a need for an updated book to help aspiring faculty navigate the new, choppier waters of online academia – and this book serves that purpose quite well.

The 2nd edition is written in a highly engaging and direct style, without the pomposity and verbosity that academics are prone to use. The book contains solid advice and specific recommendations and examples that would benefit academics at all levels of experience. First and foremost, the book explains the challenges teaching online, and then explains the further challenges that exist when one tries to make a living doing so as an “adjunctpreneur.” From there, the book provides a roadmap to landing jobs in a highly competitive environment. Results of research as to what qualities administrators are seeking during hiring are discussed. Specific examples of cover letters and CVs are shared. Interview tips are provided. Methods for obtaining additional employment and evaluating opportunities are examined. Classroom management and instructional efficiency techniques are also explored. The book concludes with recommendations on tech must-haves, time management, and “lessons learned.”

Regardless of whether you’ve taught over 1,000 courses, like myself, or are just trying to break into or expand your opportunities in academia, this book contains valuable content. It’s an enjoyable read all around. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn what online teaching entails or how to succeed on this career path.

Wow! I remember reading Dr. Babb’s book (1st edition) and deciding that I needed to set off on a new career path. I had no idea what I did not know. Now that I have been in academia for several years, reading the second edition was quite the wake-up call. Now I have a better idea of where I need to shore up my ability to not only find and land new contracts but how to keep them. Without having read this book, I do not know how the average adjunct would find out the dynamite information in Chapter 10. If you did nothing else but read Ch. 10, well, that alone is worth the price of the book. As the 1st edition was, so is the 2nd for me…What an eye opener!! Thanks again, Dr. Babb.
