    – One is the headline I just wrote. Get tips on how to entice your readers with an awesome headline.
    – Deciding that you are destined to be a writer…..if you are willing to take action.
    – You will get more support from communities of writers than you will from family and friends.

Just like any self help book, this one only helps if you take action. It makes us readers feel good to get helpful information, even if we do nothing with it. Just remember that it takes effort to get that first $1,000 from your writing. I was fortunate enough to win an eBay writing contest to the tune of $1,000 over the summer. Nice reward for getting up at 4 a.m. for over two years to level up as a writer, grinding away one blog post at a time.

If you have an hour to spare for reading, then “Make Money as a Freelance Writer” will help you get to your first $1,000. I promise.

It’s not magic though. You have to follow the guidelines that Gina and Sally have laid out here.

Love the book and hope it helps you all make real money from your passion. Nothing better than getting paid to do something you love.

Freelance writers are, of necessity, a pushy, self-promotional lot. However, this book is no more a how-to-break-into-freelancing book than a JC Penney catalogue is an instruction manual for making a fortune in retailing. “Make Money As a Freelance Writer” apparently was written only to make money for Ms. Horkey and Ms. Miller, because the book is full of links to Horkey’s courses, and other business concerns.

It does not deliver on its implied promise to advise the novice freelance writer. It tells of Horkey’s and Miller’s entry into freelancing, but does not reveal secrets. It’s almost as if the two women want to sell themselves, while avoiding giving away too much information to potential rivals for the freelance bucks.

I wasted $4.99 on this very short book. (Under 80 pages, I believe.) However, my money was much better spent on Zachary Petit’s “The Essential Guide to Freelance Writing.”

Co-written by a “new-ish” freelance writer (Sally Miller) and a highly successful veteran (Gina Horkey, of the Horkey Handbook), this book attempts to give a step-by-step approach to earning your first $1,000 as a Freelance Writer.

Just about everything is covered: mental preparation, development of successful habits, creating websites and pitches, and even where to get started finding freelance jobs (hint:it isn’t on content mills like Textbroker.) Later chapters touch on business development issues, including creating a legal entity as your dba and how to handle self-employment taxes.

The initial chapters are full of encouraging information, and can give just about anyone the ability to push themselves out into the traffic of mainstream writing. Though the later chapters are a bit weak, in my opinion, the fact remains that most of the scenarios outlined there are things that could be handled by tax pros, lawyers, and accountants – and if you have become a successful writer by that point, why not just hire other people to do this type of work for you, so you can continue writing? The book focuses on getting the business off the ground and starting cash flow in a limited time window, even with as little as an hour a day. Expanding the business beyond that initial “$1,000” is mostly taken for granted.

I highly recommend this book – utilizing Gina Horkey’s writings I was able to start my own freelance career a few months back, and am well on my way to my own first $1,000 earned. Ms. Miller’s “been there, done that” testimonials and her incorporation of feedback from many other freelancers create an encouraging picture of establishing a new writing career. If you have any interest at all in becoming a freelance writer, this book is the place to start.
